Today, Martin Luther King Day!

Dr. King is one of only three induviduals in the United States that a dedicated holiday is named for.  Today marks that special day honoring Dr. King’s birthday, which is January 15th, but it observed on the third Monday of every January.   Ronald Regan signed the observance into effect in 1983 but it wasnt officially observed until 1986.  In 2000 all 50 states observed Martin Luther King Day.

While Regan did sign the bill in the end, he did not initially take to it.  It waasnt until he was pursuaded by a majority ruling Congress that he deicded to sign the bill.

Jesse Helms, a Senator of North Carolina argued whether Dr. King was important enough to have his own holiday.  My buddy John McCain also opposed the holiday.

In Horoshima, Japan, the mayor observes Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.  He feels that recognizing Dr. King’s peaceful basis is a role model to be followed.  I find that so amazing, one of our former enemies, a city that we destoyed with an atomic bomb celebrates the life and work of an American.  I cant say that we have followed their example.
